Film cameras have become a bit of a niche market nowadays. Digital cinema cameras have overtaken the popularity of film cameras and are used by most major productions now a days. The productions that are shot on film tend to use 35mm or 65mm formats. However, smaller formats, like Super 8 and Super 16 have gained popularity in some markets. For example, over the past several years, Super 8s have enjoyed renewed use in many music videos while smaller, independent productions have been constant patrons of the Super 16 format.

Many fans of film appreciate the grainy texture and unique retro look it provides. While these effects can be added to digital content in post production, film offers a great opportunity to experiment with new techniques and effects. Slight over- and underexposure can be part of the charm with film in a way that might otherwise look a bit sloppy with a digital camera. Film offers cinematographers many ways to get creative and experiment that simply can't be done with a digital cine camera.

There are some challenges with film, however. For instance, what you get is what you get. The results of your shot will not be visible until the film is developed, which of course presents some challenges. Extensive reshooting can also incur more cost than it might with a digital camera. Film cannot be deleted, wiped clean, and reused like digital storage can.
