It is a great camera that does a lot of the work for shooting film for you. It's (as far as film goes) affordable to shoot on, has a nice lens on it, and a lot of great features. It's simple for film newbies but has an array of features even experienced shooters will enjoy. Apart from the slightly higher complexity of loading film spools vs Super 8 carts, it's a breeze to shoot on. 10/10, would recommend!

Up close of the Electric Eye Mechanism. The aperture is set to about f-11 in the photo. For a camera released in the early 70s, the auto exposure setting really is a marvel. Film speed and frame rate are both used in the exposure calculations which are displayed when looking through the viewfinder.

Footage counter and shutter control. Shutter angle is controlled by the silver lever up top. Pressing the silver button to the top left of the counter and moving the shutter control lever to 'R' allows the footage to be reversed then reshot, allowing for on-film transitions and special effects. Around the footage counter is a bezel starting at zero and going to 72 for the 72 frames in a foot of Super 8 film. The bezel can be rotated so an exact frame count can be easily obtained from shot to shot.

Film speed and frame rate adjust (top). Frame rates range from 12 to 54 fps. When initially released, a trigger/switch was sold separately which allowed single frames to be taken at a time.

Electric Eye/aperture control (bottom). It can be difficult to find Canon Zoom DS8s with working Electric Eye Mechanisms but, as state before, they were amazing technology for the time and can make shooting, even now, a real joy. Luckily, all the Canon DS8s we have for rent at IBX Films are in full working order!
